Here's exactly what you should not do:

1. Copy DX8VB.DLL from an installation of Windows XP into your Vista installation's System folder (probably C:\Windows\System, or maybe C:\WINNT\System)
2. Go into the Start menu and search for the CMD shortcut.
3. When found, right click on the CMD shortcut and select "Run as Administrator".
4. Enter "regsvr32 dx8vb.dll" (without the quotes) and click OK.
5. You should get a message saying the registration was successful, and hopefully everything will work fine.

Note that this thing you shouldn't do will not work with the 64 bit version of Vista. No promises that these steps will work either, but I've seen it posted as a solution several times.

Thanks for confirming that it's not an isolated bug on my new machine. It is certainly a good thing that I have never run any other DLLS through regsvr32 before, or I wouldn't have guessed to do that.

I've run into some other programs from Stardock that have had issues with Vista...it's quite frustrating.

Apparently, while DX9/DX10 for Vista is supposedly backwards compatible to 8.1, the Vista install does not include that DX8VB.DLL as part of a normal install. The official word from Microsoft is that DX8VB.DLL is not supported under Vista. It would be an EULA violation for me to suggest (or you attempt) copying DX8VB.DLL from an XP installation, copying it onto a Vista installation, then running it through regsvr32 to make this all work perfectly...so I won't suggest that.
