Topic: After the cleanup...

No, I'm not done with the interface cleanup, but I'm getting close. I want to talk about something I've decided to insert into the roadmap right after the cleanup. smile

There's some bits of content that I've been putting off while I work on other things. Nothing singular or major, but certainly things that would be neat to have and none of which should take very long to implement. I'm going to list a bunch of them, and you guys feel free to throw in your own ideas (since I've probably forgotten some things):

1. Alternate fire mode: The code actually supports this now...when you hold down SHIFT while firing, it tells the game that you're trying to fire in alternate fire mode. No items support it yet, but I want to add a 3-round burst to the M-16 for those that have it. I might add a perk or two that add alternative attacks to melee weapons, etc. as well.

2. Drugs: Yeah, there goes all semblance of family-friendly, I suppose. I plan to introduce a few types of addictive drugs as items in the game. They would give you a positive buff (like +10 Strength, for example). The game would keep track of how many you've used, and the higher then number that is the worse the potential effect when the buff wears off (and eventually it might start to have less of a positive effect). A really bad addiction could kill you when the buff ends. smile

3. More recipes: Throw your recipe ideas into the contributions tool! I plan to include a batch of these.

4. Redemption quests: I'm going to add a little something to most faction areas that you can do(IE: kill) to improve your reputation with that faction. Maybe killing bears (and bringing back the skins) for Choctaw. Maybe Moore is tired of those ants. Etc. Each of these completed "mini-quests" would improve your reputation a little bit.

5. More guns: Not that they would be too terribly different in function from existing weapons, but they would add a bit of variety.

6. More simple quests: Just some various little errand quests doing miscellaneous whatnots. Mostly to provide reputation and toxicity boosts and rack up your quest counts for the leader boards. smile

Throw on your own simple wish list items!

CONTINUING EDIT: I'm going to collate suggestions I plan to implement in this phase here.

1. (breckinshire) Coffee: Once per day, dosing up on caffeine can grant a small number of additional actions. Repeated use leads to caffeine addiction. Withdrawal symptoms include the LOSS of actions, or, if no actions are remaining, a loss of toxicity.
2. (Phreak) More ammo types: Slug shot for the shotgun, hollow-point for the M-16 and 9MM, and poisoned arrows for now.
3. (Phreak) Poison spear: Possibly as a crafted item, possibly with a limited number of uses before becoming a normal spear.
4. (sambrookjm) Bigger Shipping Container: The perk as described below.

I'm also thinking of burning down the Job Corp shack and just doing those Redemption Quests instead.

#2 - drugs
How about coffee?  Caffeine Addiction is a almost a recognized psychological disorder (it's rumored to be listed in the next edition of the DSM - the manual of psychological disorders).  As any fellow caffeine addicts would know, going too long without it will give you a nasty headache and slow you down.  Maybe it could give you extra actions?

Also, speaking of guns, is it possible to have different damage levels based on range?  If you shoot someone with a shotgun at close range, it will do more damage than at long range.  Also, is it possible (code-wise) for the 9mm to be a melee weapon also?  If you get desperate and have a scorpion in your face, you could always just whack it with the butt.  On the other hand, I understand making someone live with the limitations of choosing a melee over ranged weapon and vice versa.

Re: After the cleanup...

If I go 3 days without some form of caffeine, I get slow, on edge and my hands shake like I'm about to hit someone :S Coffee would be a neat addition.

The shotgun idea, I like. I think we try to keep guns and melee as separate as possible, unless it's a weapon that can obviously be used point blank (Shotgun).

My ideas after trying out everything new in the game:

~~~~
Minor quests for level 1-20:
This would make grinding more fun and rewarding. The quests don't necessarily be extremely rewarding, perhaps just a few bits for your efforts. However, quests should have some kind of achievement levels/easter eggs. For instance, if your quests is to collect 10 Cockroach Legs, once you collect 500, the quest can no longer be repeated but you get a big reward. Quests lower than your level can still be repeated until completion.
NB: This cold be implemented where the jobs quests are now. They were a good idea but, in my eyes, it wasn't really completed... there just wasn't enough content/repeat-ability.
~~~~
More ammo types:
Explosive arrows, Poisoned arrows, Armor piercing bullets.... Maybe this could hand in hand with the Alt-Fire smile
~~~~
More melee weapons:
This could be done the same way as ammo types... Sharpened Spear, Poisoned Spear, Metal plated baseball bat, Barbed-wire baseball bat.
By keeping the current weapons and just "upgrading" them, we will also save a lot of time when it comes to graphics. Make the tip of the arrow graphic green and you have a poison arrow, etc.
~~~~

That's it for now, I gotta get more testing in terms of the mining/smelting side of things before I can find more for the wish list.

Range factors into your ability to hit. You're right that a shotgun will realistically do less damage at a greater range, but I'm abstracting that by just decreasing the chance that you'll hit (the shotgun has a pretty short effective range).

Don't forget...you can switch weapons while in combat these days, so you can just switch to a melee weapon. (Just remember that switching weapons counts as your turn!)

Re: After the cleanup...

Assuming this is the small updates thread:

To go along with the similar Uber Perk for characters, how about this one:

-----------------
Slipping a few bits to the shipping manager was well worth it, as he gave you access to a larger container to put even more stuff in.

2 Ubers.
+5 slots in your shipping container.

I think I've experienced this deja vu before...

Re: After the cleanup...

Minor suggestion:
The ability to see what item graphics other people have submitted. If the is an issue for some people, then perhaps it could just be a list without the images.
The reason I bring this up is 1 person doesn't want to spend 30++ mins creating an item that someone else has already done  good job of, and uploaded.

Re: After the cleanup...

Part of the reason I don't do that is that it could be a HUGE load to view. I don't want to bog down the server with it.

Re: After the cleanup...

True. Perhaps a "Five Latest Submissions"? Not trying to push it too much as it's not going to be insanely useful.

Re: After the cleanup...

Is there an way that an item could subtract actions if equipped?  What I was thinking was a crafted armor (from the blacksmith.  The recipe probably comes from quest.) similar to plate mail:  Very protective, but very clunky.  The clunkiness would be taken into account by losing, say 10% of your actions per day.

Maybe a slightly less protective armor (chain mail) would be less protective and less clunky, resulting in only 5% loss actions?

Of course, if this can't be done, then never mind.

Re: After the cleanup...

Hmmm...that should be doable. I think you'd have to be charged upon equipping, unless it was being worn during NiMROD (and you got charged then). I'll have to ponder exactly how it would all work.
